IOM Lithuania contributed €152,000 to the Ukrainians and covered part of the rent
International Organisation for Migration Vilnius Office (IOM Lithuania) has contributed almost €152,000 to help 774 Ukrainians cover part of their rent. "Ukrainians are settling in Lithuania and looking for opportunities to establish themselves. However, starting a life from scratch is not easy and financial stability becomes one of the top priorities, which is why we as an organisation are trying to meet this need. By covering part of the rent, we hope that Ukrainians will be more secure in their accommodation," says Eitvydas Bingelis, Head of IOM Lithuania.
This is the second time that IOM Lithuania has provided assistance by reimbursing part of the rent. More than 200 families have benefited from this assistance before.
According to a survey conducted by IOM Lithuania in spring 2023, the majority of Ukrainians - 62% - rent on the open market. Compared to 2022, this figure has increased by 11% - 51% of Ukrainians rented then. Around 12% of Ukrainians did not pay rent because they were hosted by Lithuanian families. Another 10% stayed with friends or relatives. Almost half of the respondents (44%) reported that they managed to find accommodation on their own, but that it is not easy to secure long-term accommodation.
Since the start of the large-scale war in Ukraine, almost 87 000 Ukrainian war refugees have arrived in Lithuania. Over the past year, IOM Lithuania has assisted nearly 17,000 war refugees with various assistance measures.
